Auditions and Applications

Auditions are open to especially talented and qualified orchestral instrumentalists between the ages of 14 and 17 who are studying in schools, music schools, the preparatory program of a conservatory or German Hochschule, or with a private teacher. The National Youth Orchestra is made up primarly of first, second, or third prize winners in the national "Jugend musiziert" ("Youth Makes Music") competition, but participation in this program is not a requirement for application.

The National Youth Orchestra of Germany performs large and especially challenging works of the Classical, Romantic, and Modern periods.

The audtions are 10 to 15 minutes long. Two pieces or movements, one slow and one fast, from different works and musical periods, are required. The player's technical level should be "audible". String players should, in addition to a wide range of other bowing techniques, demonstrate a mastery of spiccato. Percussionists should audtion on tympani, snare drum, and marimba/xylophone or vibraphone.

The audition will be judged by teachers of the National Youth Orchestra and the project director, as well as by members of the instrumental group or the orchestra committtee.

The candidates will generally be informed of the result of the audition in writing.

A professional accompanist will be provided. Those wishing to do so are welcome to bring their own accompanist.

To request an audition, simply ask for or download the application form, fill it out, and send it back. An invitation will follow automatically as soon as audition dates have been set.
