With youthful energy and under the baton of Estonian conductor Anu Tali, the National Youth Orchestra of Germany kicks off the new year with a colourful programme. Jean Sibelius' symphonic fantasy ‘Pohjola's Daughter’ transports listeners to Nordic mythology, while Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's famous Violin Concerto in E minor shines with lyrical beauty and virtuosity – interpreted by Dutch-American violinist Stephen Waarts. With this and Mendelssohn Bartholdy's dramatic ‘Athalia’ overture and Igor Stravinsky's suite ‘The Firebird’ (1919), the young talents unfold a fascinating journey of sound in which Nordic images, dramatic conflicts and magical worlds collide, creating an intense experience for the senses. The title heroines represent central, mythical and often ambivalent figures who embody power, mystery and influence. In Stravinsky's ‘Firebird’, the female characters symbolise hope and redemption by acting as catalysts for the happy ending.
